Flowing Light:

Room for Mechthild of Magdeburg

Beeswax, wood, honey, candles; 27´ W x 25´ L x 12´ H; table 12´ L x 3´ W x 30″ H

Flowing Light is a poetic homage to the Thirteenth-Century German mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg, a meditation on love, devotion, and the ineffable forces that course through the human heart. Inspired by her luminous writings, the installation seeks to render her emotional and metaphysical reflections in material form, inviting viewers into a space where passion and contemplation intermingle.

Layers of warm beeswax veil one side of the windows, poured in fluid drips that solidify into a delicate cascade, evoking the gentle, downward flow of divine love. At the heart of the room, a wooden table bears a poem by Mechthild, carved and filled with honey, a symbol of receptivity and the sweetness of devotion. Opposite the windows, a constellation of slender candles rises, some flickering with flame, their vertical rhythm echoing an upward surge of love. Together, these elements form a cyclical dance—wax flowing downward, flames ascending—manifesting the endless, unflagging movement of the heart’s devotion.

Inscribed on the table, the poem reads:

“The great overflowing of divine love that never stops and flows forevermore without pause, without any effort, with such sweet flow ever unflagging, that our little vessel becomes full and overflows.”
