Refinement of Matter
Sand, glass, mirror, water, wood; 20´ W x 25´ L x 2´ H
In Refinement of Matter, the elemental and the symbolic converge in a quietly mesmerizing choreography of transformation. The installation unfolds in four concentric squares: sand forms the outermost layer, followed by shards of broken glass, then fragments of mirror, and finally, a pool of still water at the center. Each material marks a stage in a process of refinement, tracing a subtle arc from the physical to the reflective, from the tangible to the contemplative.
While sand’s granular presence evokes the raw and mutable, the progression through glass and mirror gestures toward human intervention and polish—an alchemical translation of matter into form. At the center, water transcends mere materiality, flowing into the metaphysical: a gentle, liquid meditation on impermanence, transformation, and the poetic possibilities embedded in the everyday. Refinement of Matter invites viewers to witness both the elegance of material evolution and the subtle shift from the seen to the felt, the formal to the contemplative.
