Handwoven wool rug; 26″ x 40″
This body of work reimagines the traditional prayer rug through a contemporary lens, blending reverence with abstraction. Hand-woven in Nepal using locally sourced wool, each piece is a tactile meditation on heritage, ritual, and transformation. Inspired by the spiritual geometry and symbolic architecture of Islamic prayer rugs, these compositions fragment and layer elements—arches, flora, calligraphic gestures—into a patchwork of memory and migration.
By deconstructing and reassembling familiar motifs, the rugs become portals—spaces for reflection, not only of faith but of displacement, longing, and belonging. The weaving process itself becomes an act of devotion, a rhythm of hands and threads connecting the past to the present. While rooted in tradition, the work resists nostalgia, inviting new interpretations of sacred space in an increasingly fragmented world.
Each rug is both artifact and offering—a quiet rebellion in color and texture, where the spiritual and the contemporary converge.
