Sofreh

Handwoven, natural dyed wool rug; 40″x 40″

Sofreh is a series of contemporary Persian rugs created in collaboration with traditional artisans in Iran. The project merges the rich heritage of Persian rug-making with a contemporary sensibility, resulting in works that honor tradition while reflecting the spirit of our times. Produced in the Yasooj region—renowned for its flat-weave rugs—these pieces reinterpret classic forms and patterns through a modern lens.

The title, Sofreh, literally means “spread” and carries deep cultural significance in Iran. Traditionally, a sofreh is a cloth or rug laid out on the floor or table for meals, symbolizing home, gathering, and respect. This iconic form serves as a canvas for the series, evoking shared spaces, family, and communal experience.

Fusing Iranian and American cultural perspectives, Sofreh explores the harmony and unity that emerges when traditions intersect. The rugs are designed to embody tranquility, balance, and peace, offering a contemporary interpretation of cultural continuity and connection.
