Fountain Head

Located along Main Street in Walnut Creek, California, Fountain Head reimagines the traditional village fountain as both a source of water and a symbol of human wisdom. The fiberglass sculpture depicts an oversized human head from which water jets upward through the crown—the “soft spot” or fontanelle—a point historically associated with vitality and enlightenment.

Fountains have long served as social and spiritual centers, sustaining daily life while inspiring myth and art. In Fountain Head, these associations merge with humor and playfulness. The act of water springing from the top of the head evokes the flow of thought, creativity, and intuition. Drawing on cross-cultural references—from the crown chakra in Indian philosophy to the birth of Athena from Zeus’s head—the work connects the life-giving properties of water with the illumination of the mind.

The golden hue of the sculpture reinforces this link, evoking solar energy, vitality, and wisdom. Scaled to be visible from both pedestrians and passing cars, Fountain Head is designed as a public gesture of joy and reflection—a reminder that knowledge, like water, is a shared and renewing source of life.
