Signs of the Times
Paint and vinyl on utility box; 32″W x 24″D x 65″H
Emeryville, California
Signs of the Times transforms ordinary traffic utility boxes into small-scale public artworks that engage pedestrians with humor, poetry, and reflection. Using the familiar stick-figure motif, each design presents brief vignettes that invite viewers to pause and consider aspects of daily life and human experience.
Originally conceived in 2007, the project began with 17 boxes, developed in collaboration with eight students from Emeryville High School over two months. In 2009, the program expanded with eight additional designs, bringing the total to 25. In 2017, new designs were commissioned, refreshing the project for contemporary audiences.
By situating art in everyday urban contexts, Signs of the Times encourages public interaction and playful discovery, turning functional infrastructure into sites of creative engagement. The project reflects the collaborative effort of educators and students, highlighting the power of community participation in shaping shared spaces.
