Where is Fairfield?
Community-wide interactive public art project; various mediums and materials
Fairfield, California
Where is Fairfield? was a citywide, participatory public art initiative designed to engage the community in exploring its own identity. Collaborating with residents of all ages, the project presented the question “Where is Fairfield?” across a broad range of media, including banners, bookmarks, buttons, murals, video installations, public signage, t-shirts, and even an airplane banner. From oral histories collected by high school students to a quilt created with community input, each element offered a unique reflection on the city’s character.
The project emphasized interaction and feedback, inviting participants to contribute their experiences, perceptions, and stories, which were then shared with the community at large. By amplifying local voices and highlighting Fairfield’s historical, social, and cultural dimensions, Where is Fairfield? sought to cultivate civic pride and a renewed sense of belonging, encouraging residents to see their city through both familiar and fresh perspectives.
