Calligraphic Expressions
Digital prints; 36″H x 44″W
I am fascinated by how meaning forms in words, how words can slowly lose their impact, and how they can convey subtle, layered experiences. Mystical writings and poetry captivate me because they strive to express the most delicate aspects of human perception. I find it inspiring when a mystic, having encountered a reality beyond the senses and intellect, uses ordinary language to convey the extraordinary. Suddenly, the everyday transforms into poetry, and the familiar becomes new again. In these works, I re-present these writings to explore both the form and meaning of the words themselves while honoring the profound significance behind each poem, creating a dialogue between what is seen and what is hidden.
Each piece features a single line of poetry rendered in traditional Persian calligraphy. I create the lines digitally using a customized calligraphic “pen” on a tablet. I repeat the line across the background, while the same characters appear in the foreground at a much larger scale, transformed until they are nearly unrecognizable. The result is a dynamic interplay between the dense, jumbled background of text and the expressive, abstracted foreground, offering viewers a layered experience of language and form.
