“Neptune’s Gate”; Books, Photographs, Handwriten text, Bookshelf; 7’W x 3’D x 8’H
This community interactive project was inspired by a local organization in the early history of Manhattan Beach, California, called “Neptune’s Society”. This was a group of women who started reading nights and eventually established the first public library in the city.
For this project the elders of the community were invited to participate by recommending one of the most interesting books that they had read in their lives. They shared their stories through their handwriting as well as photographs. These books were displayed and available to the public in a combination bookshelf and bench archway structure at the local public library.
