Re-orient; Acrylic on canvas; 72″ x 96″

Re-orient is inspired by the gestural characteristics of Persian/Arabic calligraphy in order to create abstract compositions. Each gesture has been fragmented, magnified and taken out of its familiar context to present a new form of expression. These articulations are captured utilizing a paintbrush, as opposed to the traditional bamboo calligraphic pen. The strokes in these paintings are not intended to represent words or even complete letters, and are therefore more abstract, primitive and suggestive of motion and e-motion.

Re-orient seeks to explore a new territory, somewhere between the realm of conventional language and the raw mark making of a child; to reorient language and thereby draw out some of the meaning it was once intended to express.
