Nocturne; Watercolor and gouache on paper
This body of work explores a somber and quiet atmosphere within a minimal and abstract composition. The narrative in these paintings has been reduced to its bare essentials in search of the nuances of silence and stillness. They are done in watercolor and gouache on watercolor paper, and consist of horizontal bands of subdued colors with overlapping diffused edges. They vary in size from 14” x 20” up to 25” x 40”.
Nocturne reflects a similar mood and sensitivity as that of American Tonalism. The reference to landscape in these paintings however, is suggested through the use of horizontal layers of earth tone colors. In this way, Nocturnes also echo the visual voices and vocabularies of Persian nomadic kilims, where naturally dyed wool yarns are interwoven into simple linear or geometric compositions that speak with a singularly universal voice.
